Lovely molding on the living room ceiling. So special to have a collection of artwork made by your mom.
Commenters on LibraryThing often note that they live in a library with attached bedroom, bath and kitchen. In our case add woodworking shop, sewing area, bicycle storage and chemical and digital darkroom spaces. We live in an established ranch house area no more than 35 minutes by bike or 15minutes by car from work and anything we need on a week to week basis. It's affordable, leaves a low carbon footprint and is conductive to a producing rather than consuming lifestyle. People tend to stay for years and spend time at home so there's more opportunity and incentive to be good neighbors.
Small homes are fine if you don't spend much time at home. Most of my single/YA life was spent in dwellings in the 400 to 500 sq.ft range. But I only spent an hour or two of my waking time in my apt. Socializing and recreational activities outside of one's home in a big city gets expensive fast. Also, small dwellings in large cities often have transient populations- so being a part of a community is often difficult and takes time and effort. As for inexpensive, an OPB article on micro housing in Portland had a single person paying $1800/mo (utilities included!) rent for 350sq. ft.
